The story
The premise was simple – conduct the design process in reverse. Instead of being given the brief first and told to come up with a solution, we were given an ominous carte blanche to do whatever we wanted.
For three weeks we worked solely in our sketchbooks to come up with enough different ideas for a possible product that we still wasn’t aware of. The product could have been anything; from a poster to a car to a tin pot. The possibilities were endless and our ideas had to be too if we were going to have enough variety in our sketchbooks to use on any product.
By the end of the three weeks most people had at least 48 different possibilities to put on a product. Now all we needed to know was the product.
A cryptic eMail was received asking us to pick 1 or 2. I picked 1, and had to apply one of my ideas to a Trexi, a vinyl toy that regularly attracts designers in to design new and different Trexis.
After toying with a few ideas I knew my arrows idea was the strongest, and set about producing flat artwork and angled artwork to showcase my design (see above).
6 weeks later and the end product is this.
Other Trexi designs and the M5 Coke Bottle designs (product choice number 2 on the eMail) can be seen on the HND Interactive Media website.
